Swimmer in Ocean City died after being rescued from a rip current

Officials in Ocean City say a swimmer from Montgomery County has died after being rescued from a rip current.

Town spokeswoman Jessica Waters say three swimmers got caught in a riptide about 4:30 p.m. Monday near the 137th Street beach. The Ocean City Beach Patrol says one of its lifeguards was able to rescue two of the swimmers, but the third could not be immediately found.

Eventually the missing was swimmer was found, a police department spokeswoman said. He was transported to a nearby hospital by paramedics who were standing by, but was pronounced dead shortly after.

The swimmer, identified only as being an 18-year-old man Montgomery County, was taken to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.
