HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The owners of a dog that was shot by a Hagerstown police officer say they have had the animal put down.
Mary Gesford told The (Hagerstown) Herald-Mail on Thursday that the family had the black Labrador retriever euthanized Wednesday, nearly two weeks after Officer Jesse Duffey shot him in the muzzle.
Hagerstown Police Chief Arthur Smith says Duffey shot the aggressive dog when it cornered him in an apartment building owned by the Gesfords.
Smith says the officer was trying to serve a warrant on a tenant in the building. Smith says he hopes the city will be able to help with the family's veterinary bills.
