Maryland State Troopers reported to the scene of a small plane crash at Fairview Vista Road in Bowie.

According to officials a single-engine aircraft also known as a Cessna 172 was found upside down in the trees.

Police say the pilot, 72-year-old Michael Paul Pillsbury, told troopers that he was flying from Ocean City and was attempting to make a landing at Freeway Airport in Bowie. He also told police that because he didn't see the tree line as he was approaching the airport, the plane made contact with the tree and crashed.

The pilot was later taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say there were no signs of fuel leakage and no signs of impairment.
