Prince George's County Executive and Democratic candidate for Governor Rushern Baker announced Elizabeth Embry as his choice for Lieutenant Governor.
Embry is a former Baltimore prosecutor and division chief in the Maryland Attorney General's office.
She is a Baltimore native and graduate of Baltimore City College high school. She graduated from Columbia Law School and moved back to Baltimore to join the Baltimore City State's Attorneys' Officer as entry-level law clerk.
She is also a former mayoral candidate for Baltimore. She ran in 2016.
"Elizabeth Embry has dedicated her life to public service because she cares about doing the right thing. As a Baltimore native, Elizabeth's passion for public service and progress developed at a young age. She's committed to finding solutions for forgotten neighborhoods, declining infrastructure, and failing school systems," said Baker about his running mate.
He made his announcement at Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens in Baltimore. Baker said he chose this spot given Embry's lifelong ties to Baltimore and his strong personal relationship with the late delegate and Chair of the Appropriations Committee, Howard Peters Rawlings, Jr. for whom the conservatory is named.
"From his unwavering passion for improvements in public education to his Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative, Rushern Baker has the vision to create a Maryland that works for everyone. Most politicians talk – Rushern Baker gets things done. Rushern Baker will get things done for Maryland and I'm honored to serve as his running mate," said Embry.
Baker is one of 8 Democrats vying for the nomination.
Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz is running but has not announced his running mate yet.
Krishanti Vignarajah, a former Policy Director to former First Lady Michelle Obama, is the only woman running and also hasn't announced her running mate.
Ralph Jaffe announced his candidacy.
Ben Jealous, former President and CEO of the NAACP, is running with Susie Turnbull, former Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party.
Attorney Jim Shea announced last week that he will run with City Councilman Brandon Scott.
State Senator Richard Madaleno announced his running mate Monday at Western High School. Luwanda Jenkins used to work as an aide to former Governor Martin O'Malley.
Alec Ross also announced his running mate on Monday. He chose craft brewery owner Julie Verratti.
The only republican in the race right now is Governor Larry Hogan.
Interested candidates have one more week to file to run for Governor. The deadline is February 27.
The primary election in Maryland is being held on June 26.
