State lawmakers want Maryland’s guns laws to be an example for the rest of the country.

On Wednesday, Rep. Chris Van Hollen introduced the Handgun Purchaser Licensing Act of 2015.

The measure encourages other states to adopt the same gun laws as Maryland by offering incentives and funding to those who implement the rigid gun control.

“These are measures that we know will save lives,” Van Hollen said. “The evidence is in and we want to encourage other states around the country to follow suit.”

The bill includes requiring fingerprint checks and getting a qualification license to own a gun.

The bill is supported by research from the Johns Hopkins Center For Gun Policy and Research.

The study showed a link between requiring a license to buy a handgun and a reduction in gun related homicides.
