A Worcester County man’s journey to becoming a millionaire started with limes.
The Powerball player won $1 million over the weekend when he bought a winning Powerball Quick-Pick ticket at the Berlin Food Lion, the Maryland Lottery said.
The 51-year-old man, who is choosing to remain anonymous, had already bought a Powerball ticket in Delaware for last Saturday’s drawing when he decided to stop at the Food Lion for limes. He needed two, and declined to buy them at another store because he thought they were too expensive.

That night, after he learned he won, he didn’t sleep well, too focused on what a difference the money would make for his family.
“I was numb,” the man told lottery officials.

He was one of 28 second-tier Powerball winners across the country in Saturday’s drawing, and the only second-tier winner in Maryland.
Seven Marylanders won $50,000 third-tier prizes, and three of them added the Power Play feature to their tickets, tripling their prizes to $150,000.
The million-dollar winner, an employee in the HVAC field, said he’ll pay off college loans for his children, his and his significant other’s debts and then decide how to enjoy what’s left.
The Berlin Food Lion also received a $2,500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
The Powerball jackpot has increased to a record-setting $1.5 billion, and the next drawing is Wednesday night.
