THURMONT, Md. (AP) -- The commander of the Marine Corps Barracks in Washington says a Camp David guard killed by a hit-and-run driver was acting in a characteristically selfless manner when he was struck.
Col. Benjamin Watson issued the statement Wednesday as police searched for the truck that hit 21-year-old Cpl. William Ferrell Tuesday night.
Maryland State Police say Ferrell was killed while assisting a disabled motorist on the shoulder of northbound U.S. 15 in a rainstorm near Thurmont.
They say the truck that hit him was a tractor-trailer or heavy-duty pickup with a car-hauling trailer.
Watson says Ferrell's unit is "heartbroken" by his death.
Ferrell was assigned to Camp David last year. He was from Carthage, North Carolina.
He graduated from basic training in 2012 and promoted to corporal in August 2014.
Police are looking for the driver of a truck with a car hauler that struck and killed a man who stopped to help a disabled vehicle during heavy rain.
Police say Ferrell was beside his Nissan Titan on the shoulder when a tractor trailer or heavy-duty pickup truck with a car hauling trailer left the road, striking and killing him. Witnesses tell police that as they tended to Ferrell, the truck stopped for a few minutes, then pulled away. Police say the truck should have damage to its right side.
