FREDERICK, Md. -
A man arrested for drunk driving is lucky to be alive after police pulled him from his burning car Saturday morning.
Frederick police rescued David Keith Walker, 30, from the driver's seat of his engulfed car just after 3 a.m. Saturday. He was arrested shortly afterwards for driving under the influence of alcohol.
When the officer arrived at the scene the entire passenger compartment was filled with thick smoke and the car was ablaze. The officer tried unsuccessfully extinguish the flames but was able to open the driver's door and pull Walker from the vehicle just as firefighters were arriving on the scene.
Police say Walker hit a parked car and due to minor damage was unable to drive forward. He continued to spin his wheels at a furious speed and with such force that a tire caught fire which quickly spread to the engine compartment.
Walker refused treatment and was taken to Frederick County Central Booking where he was charged with driving under the influence and other related charges.
