A police officer had just arrived at a crash scene when his cruiser was struck by a drunk driver on Saturday evening.
Around 6:30 p.m. officers had been called to an accident in the area of Norbeck Rd and Llewellyn Manor Way in Colesville. Officer Matthew Runkles was the first to arrive at the scene. Before he could exit his vehicle but after turning on his emergency lights, a 1995 Mercedes-Benz S500 driving west on Norbeck Rd struck the police cruiser then swerved around it and stopped. Police say the ten-year veteran of the department was taken to a hospital and has already been released with non-life-threatening injuries.
65-year-old Morris Moody, the driver of the Mercedes, was arrested and charged for driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol as well as other traffic offenses.
According to ta release, Moody’s Blood Alcohol Content was measured at .17 (the legal limit in Maryland is .08).
In a release, Montgomery County Police remind drivers “who choose to drink alcohol to make the right decision and choose a sober driver for your ride home.”
