Women mirror Clinton's efforts to break barriers

Hillary Clinton is setting political precedents. She clinched the Washington D.C. primary last week —the last primary in this year’s election—and is set to become the first woman to win the nomination of a major political party in the United States.

While Clinton isn’t the first woman to make a White House bid, she’s the only woman to get this close to the presidency. 

Here in Maryland, several women have mirrored Clinton’s efforts to knock down barriers and become firsts in their field.

"In Maryland, we're one of the premiere states to recognize the contributions of women for many years," said Diana M. Bailey, executive director of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center in Baltimore. "Yet we still have a lot more to do. We're still trying to open doors for more opportunities, especially for diverse women."

From medicine to public service here are just a few prominent women making history in our state:
