Prince George’s County Schools will be closed Wednesday due to a high number of teachers requesting leave for the “A Day Without a Woman” protests.

The school system issued a statement saying that “approximately 1,700 teachers and 30 percent of transportation staff have requested leave.”

Without these staff members, school officials said they can’t adequately teach or provide transportation for students.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this will surely cause to many families,” officials said.

The protest comes as organizers of January’s Women’s March call for women nationwide to take off work and avoid spending money to demonstrate the impact women have on society.

Schools in Alexandria, Va. will also be closed to observe the strike.
