Pedestrian killed on Rt 198

MARYLAND CITY, Md. - State police are investigating a crash on 198 near 295 that killed a pedestrian.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. on Route 198, between Russett Green and Route 295 in Maryland City.

The patient was taken to Laurel Regional Hospital, where he later died. He has been identified as 15-year-old Jaelin D. Ashe of Carriage Walk Lane in Laurel.

Officials say the teen was attempting to cross the road and using the crosswalk, but he was not using the pedestrian signals. He was struck by a Chevrolet Camaro traveling east along Route 198 approaching the intersection. Ashe was reportedly narrowly missed by a second vehicle.

According to a report provided by the Anne Arundel County Police Department, there is no evidence to support speed or impairment were factors in the accident.

Family members of Jaelin Ashe say he was a JROTC cadet and a freshman member of the Meade High School junior varsity football team. Ashe had his JROTC uniform on Thursday morning and was en route to his girlfriend's house. They planned to ride the bus together to school.
