The debate over whether school buses should have seat belts goes before the General Assembly Thursday.

The House of Delegates is holding a hearing on the Maryland Student Transportation Safety Act.

The bill would make it mandatory that all public school buses be equipped with seat belts. If it passes the rule would go into effect in October 2019.

Back in November six adults died when a school bus crashed into an MTA bus in Southwest Baltimore.

Maryland is one of 17 states considering requiring seat belts on school buses. Pennsylvania and Virginia are debating similar laws.
