MD Board of Public Works to discuss technical problems with the health care exchange

Board meeting scheduled for 9 a.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Board of Public Works is scheduled to consider a contract modification of up to $2 million due to technical problems with the state's health care exchange.

The board is meeting Wednesday to consider the emergency contract modification to provide outreach, education and enrollment services to HealthChoice and Maryland Children's Health Program enrollees.

A summary of the board agenda says a large number of newly eligible enrollees who were anticipated to receive assistance with their managed care organization choice through the exchange will instead need assistance from an enrollment broker.

The circumstances are described as constituting an emergency, because failure to provide the services will impede access to care for tens of thousands of state residents.

The board includes Gov. Martin O'Malley, Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Nancy Kopp.
