Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake reaffirmed Thursday that Baltimore is a welcoming city for immigrants.

She is one of nearly a dozen mayors nationwide supporting that idea.

The reaffirmation is a response to President-elect Donald Trump's immigration proposals to create a Muslim registry and deport up to 3 million illegal immigrants.

It is unclear whether Rawlings-Blake will go as far as naming Baltimore a sanctuary city - an unofficial title for a city that adopts the policy to protect undocumented immigrants.

Cities like San Francisco issue identification cards to immigrants, giving them access to government services.

Trump has vowed to hold millions of tax dollars if city officials do not cooperate, but state and cities cannot be required to enforce federal law.

Between 2010 and 2014, Baltimore had an immigrant population of 7.5 percent.
