Gov. Larry Hogan and Comptroller Peter Franchot are scheduled to make an announcement regarding the starting date of Maryland schools in future years.

Spokesmen for the governor and the comptroller on Monday declined to offer details, but both officials have supported starting school after Labor Day.

Franchot announced Monday that a news conference has been set for Wednesday afternoon in Ocean City.

Franchot released a YouTube video on Monday with Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan talking about the positive aspects of a later school start.

Supporters of starting school after Labor Day say extending summer vacation by between five and 10 days would increase family time and help small businesses that would benefit from a boost in tourism. But school superintendents have been opposed to the idea.
