Officials say 26 people have been indicted after an investigation into gang activity in Maryland's prisons, including a correctional officer identified as a high-ranking gang member.
The Maryland attorney general's office announced the indictments Thursday in Baltimore, along with state corrections officials and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The charges range from attempted first-degree murder to smuggling contraband into prison facilities.
Officials say the initial target of the investigation was a correctional officer identified as a high-ranking member of the 8-Trey Crips street gang.
Officials say the investigation grew to include an additional corrections officer and other co-conspirators who prosecutors say were running a large-scale, contraband-delivery operation in several Maryland correctional facilities.
