LA PLATA, Md. - An anonymous winner has claimed the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot in Maryland history.
The Maryland resident bought one of two winning tickets in the March 18 drawing for the $414 million Mega Millions jackpot. A Florida couple claimed the other ticket last week.
After taxes, the Maryland winner will receive $76.4 million.
The ticket was purchased at Lady’s Liquors in La Plata. The store will receive a $100,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
“Everyone benefits when a winning jackpot ticket is sold in Maryland,” Stephen Martino, director of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, said in a news release. “This jackpot win gave the state of Maryland some welcome and unanticipated tax revenue.”
Because the winner took the cash option, that tax revenue was more than $10.1 million.
This was the first MegaMillions jackpot win in Maryland this year, following two wins in 2013.
Maryland’s largest jackpot win came in 2012, when three winners claimed a $218.6 million prize. That was part of the largest Mega Millions jackpot in history, when winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland shared a $656 million jackpot.
