House Bill 881 would bring the death penalty back to Maryland, in certain circumstances
House Bill 881, now in Annapolis, would bring back the death penalty if a person is convicted of 1st degree murder of a law enforcement officer, correctional officer or first responder.
Under the proposal, certain procedures would be put in place to assist juries in determining if the death penalty could be considered.
The method of execution is among the things a jury would have to consider.

Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley signed a bill May 2, 2013 that stopped death penalty cases in Maryland.
Another bill, House Bill 1152, requests a task force to examine reinstating the death penalty in Maryland. The task force, which would be made up of several lawmakers and members of the community, would have until December 1, 2018 to report its findings and recommendations.
