The Maryland Food Bank will receive about 3.5 acres of land from NRG, a Fortune 200 Company and a leading power company in the U.S., at its plant in Dorcester County to support the food bank’s Farm to Food Bank program.

The land will be harvested and managed by Black Gold Farms. Black Gold Farms is already a partner with the Maryland Food Bank in the program.

The program creates a network of farms across Maryland to get fresh, local produce to hungry Marylanders. Nearly one in eight Maryland residents face food insecurity each year, according to the Maryland Food Bank.
Once harvested, the Maryland Food Bank distributes produce to over 1,200 soup kitchens, schools, food pantries and shelters.

"The food bank is incredibly grateful to NRG for this generous donation of land to support our Farm to Food Bank program, and to Black Gold Farms for their commitment to farm the land," Maryland Food Bank president and CEO Beth Martino said in a statement. "Meaningful partnerships like this will help us continue to provide food across the state, serving more than 44 million meals per year. We are grateful to partners like NRG that are interested in implementing common sense solutions to tackle challenges like food insecurity."
