1 in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. Komen Maryland hopes to raise plenty of money for research to battle the disease with their 2016 Promise Ride.
This is the organization's first time doing a bike ride. If you want to participate, you can still sign up for either the 34 mile race or the 65 mile course. The Promise Ride will begin at South River High School in Edgewater and goes through Calvert County. There will be rest stops every 12-15 miles for the racers.
If you sign up before the end of the month, it'll only cost you $35. After that, registration costs $50. You have to be 18 or older to participate and the race will take place rain or shine. Mark Roeder is the executive director of Komen Maryland. He thinks the turnout for the first ever bike race is already looking promising.
"We're hoping for the ride this year to have 300 cyclists," Roeder said. We're pacing well towards that number and our goal here is to raise about 100,000 dollars. We think that with that size of a ride, it will be a comfortable ride so that the road won't feel too crowded for our cyclists."
The goal of the race is to have each cyclist raise at least $180 for breast cancer research. Since 1993, Komen Maryland has raised over $37 million in the fight against breast cancer.
The Promise Ride takes place June 25. All donations must be received the day before the event.
