Maryland is continuing to work on lowering its carbon footprint.
Gov. Larry Hogan signed the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act of 2016, requiring the state to cut emissions economy-wide now by 40 percent below 2006 levels by 2030.
The bill deepens the state's existing emissions reduction mandate first passed in 2009.
Chesapeake Climate Action Network Director Mike Tidwell says the governor's signature commits the state to cutting the strongest greenhouse gas reductions in the nation.
So far, only California and New York have set higher climate goals.
