The Maryland for Emergency Medical Services Systems honored several groups Wednesday at its annual Stars of Life Awards.
Among those honored was Frederick County dispatcher Bill Andrews. Back in Nov. 2016, he got a frantic call from Karen Osborne. She was being violently attacked by a 200 lb. bear near Frederick.

"There are no protocols for a bear attack because as I found out later it doesn't happen in MD," Andrews said. "I could hear the bear in the background and the lady was saying she was going to die and I just tried to reassure her that help was coming."
Andrews kept Osborne as calm until helped arrive. Osborne was badly hurt in the attack and had to get nearly 80 stitches, but she survived.
Also honored in Wednesday's ceremony was a group of children who helped save someone in their community and the entire EMS team from Queen Anne's County who cared for Deputy First Class Scott Hogan. The Queen Anne's County deputy was shot in Dec. 2016 taking a woman home after a domestic dispute. Hogan is still recovering from his injuries.
