A former Prince George's County school board member is scheduled to be sentenced Friday for stealing more than $1,700 in school lunches between 2011 and 2015.
Lynette Mundey, a Government Accountability Office employee, was found guilty in February of felony theft-scheme, filing a false public assistance application, welfare fraud and related charges.
During a 2014 audit of the School Meals program, the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that a number of its employees in Prince George’s County had applied for and were receiving free or reduced-price lunches, although they should have been ineligible. On the applications they either under reported their income or reported no income at all.
Mundey was applying for and receiving the free lunches valued at $2.60 per day although her income was more than $70,000. Her income increased to almost $95,000 when she was appointed to the school board in 2013.
To qualify for the school meals program, an applicant must earn between $11,600 and $40,000, depending on household size.
Mundey could face a maximum time of 49 years in prison.
