UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - Former Prince George's County Executive Wayne Curry has died.
Curry died at his Upper Marlboro home. He was 63. The Washington Post reports he told people in April that he had lung cancer.
The Democrat was elected county executive in 1994 and served in office until 2002.
Democratic Lt. Governor Anthony Brown said in a statement Wednesday that the county has lost a leader who fought "for justice, fairness, economic equality, and a brighter future for all of our children." Brown says Curry had "a passion for service and a lifelong commitment to advocacy."
Curry was African-American and the Post reports that, as a student in Prince George's, he helped desegregate his elementary and high schools.
