Officials say at least two firefighters are in critical condition after being shot in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C.

Prince George's County Fire/EMS spokesman Mark Brady says firefighters were responding to a welfare call at a single-family home in Temple Hills when they were shot Friday night. He says details of the shooting are unclear and one other person, thought to be a civilian, was shot in the shoulder.

He says both firefighters were in critical condition, and one was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and he is in surgery. Kevin Swain is a volunteer firefighter.

A second firefighter, a paramedic, was transported to MedStar Southern Maryland where he succumbed to his injuries. John Ulmschneider, 39, was a 13-year veteran with the Prince George's County fire department. He's married with one child.

The incident happened about 7:30 p.m. Friday. Firefighters received a call from a concerned civilian. When firefighters arrived at the home, they decided to make entry to assess the situation. The person inside the home, whom the firefighters were there to check on, fired several shots. The concerned civilian was injured, but not seriously.

The suspect is in custody and cooperating.
