Damascus man charged in 3-year-old son's death

DAMASCUS, Md. - A 36-year-old Damascus man has been charged with first-degree murder and child abuse  for allegedly killing his 3-year-old adopted son.

Montgomery County police said Brian Patrick O' Callaghan, of the 25200 block of Conrad Court is responsible for the death of  Hyunsu O'Callaghan earlier this month.

Police said on Feb. 2, detectives were notified that the child was at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. where he was unresponsive and had multiple injuries. Investigators learned that the victim's injuries included trauma to the brain and that he was recently beaten.

 The victim's father could not explain the injuries to doctors, police said.

Hyunsu died Feb. 3 and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the District of Columbia determined his death was a homicide caused by multiple blunt impact injuries.

Police said Brian O' Callaghan told investigators he complete care and custody of Hyunsu from Jan. 31 through Feb. 1 when he drove his son, who was unresponsive, to the Shady Grove Adventist Emergency Center at Germantown. The child was then transported to the Children's National Medical Center.

Brian O' Callaghan was arrested and charged in connection to his son’s death on Feb. 16. He is currently being held without bond. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 240-773-5070.
