College Park fire causes nearly $40M in damage

A fire at an unfinished apartment building in Prince George's County caused nearly $40 million in damage.

The 5-alarm fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Fuse 47 building in the 4700 block of Berwyn House Road.

The building would have been home to about 250 apartments, retail stores and a parking garage.

It took about 200 firefighters several hours to bring the fire at the 7-story mid-rise building under control.

A total of 68 residents at the Gladys Spellman House for seniors directly across the street were forced out of their homes for several hours. One resident was taken to the hospital after experiencing difficulty breathing.

Two first responders also were treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The University of Maryland, College Park campus to scheduled to open on time Tuesday.
