The College Park City Council voted Tuesday night to allow non-citizens to vote in city elections, even if they're in the country illegally.

The vote passed 4 to 3 after a heated four hour meeting. During the meeting, residents shared their thoughts on the issue. Some supporting the right for non-citizens to vote,

"Not a single one of you on that podium who are women, people of color, members of the LGBT community would be sitting on that podium tonight if your civil rights were decided by a referendum that you couldn't even vote on," said a member of the community.

But not everyone agreed. The room was packed with people on both sides of the issue.

The city council was deadlocked on having a non-binding voter referendum on allowing non-citizens to vote. Mayor Patrick Wojahn made the tie-breaking vote against having the referendum.
