Members of the Bike Maryland advocacy group are petitioning the state to install pedestrian-friendly traffic lights at an intersection in Montgomery County.
Advocates said two cyclists were recently killed crossing Veirs Mill Road at Turkey Branch Parkway, accidents they believe could have been prevented using HAWK Beacon traffic light technology.
High Intensity Crosswalk Beacons, or HAWKs, are pedestrian-activated red lights combined with a traditional walk signal designed to increase crosswalk safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The petition has garnered more than 1000 signatures.
