Baltimore among highest in the nation for commuters

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Nearly 207,000 workers commute into Baltimore, ranking the city among the highest in the nation, according to new census figures.

Maryland, meanwhile, is among the leaders nationwide in long commutes.

More than 35 percent of Baltimore workers live outside of the city, according to the figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau. Nationally, 27.4 percent of workers commute outside the county where they live.

And Maryland is among the top three states in commutes more than an hour long. More than 16 percent of New York workers had a commute an hour or longer, while Maryland and New Jersey ranked second and third at just under 15 percent.

The survey found about 8.1 percent of U.S. workers have commutes of 60 minutes or longer.
