Mars Super Markets' CEO and Chairman released the following statement Wednesday:

"We have made the difficult decision to close all our stores, effective July 31. In conjunction with the store closures, five stores are slated to be sold to Weis Markets.  Weis has agreed to interview Mars employees for positions at the five stores - Essex, Arbutus, Carney and both stores in Dundalk - and will begin operating this summer.  At the same time, Mars will continue to make efforts to backfill the remaining stores with other food retailers, seeking to create as many re-employment opportunities as possible. It has been an honor to serve the Baltimore community since 1943, but with the changing competitive environment, this became our only viable option. We will always be grateful to our loyal customers and to our associates who serve them."

The Baltimore-based company plans to keep all locations fully operational until the purchase agreement is complete in July.
