GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Montgomery County police say a Gaithersburg woman apparently shot her estranged husband before turning the gun on herself, leaving both of them dead.
Investigators said Monday that 38-year-old David Reid Jr. and 39-year-old Michelle Reid died at an area hospital after the incident late Sunday night.
The woman was an attorney for John Hopkins. Hopkins issued a statement in response to the shooting:
We are deeply saddened by this tragic event. Michelle Reid was an attorney and an equity compliance specialist in the university's Office of Institutional Equity. She performed investigations on discrimination and harassment complaints. Sher also conducted training for students, faculty and staff on preventing harassment and discrimination in the workplace and in the academic environment.
Ms. Reid had been an employee of the university since early January. In that time, she had demonstrated herself to be a hard-working and valued member of the Institutional Equity staff.
Montgomery County police said that approximately 11:20 p.m., officers working in the area of Girard Street and Allied Place heard gunshots. Officers entered the parking garage in the 500 block of Raven Avenue and discovered David Reid suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Fire/Rescue personnel transported the man to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
While officers and fire/rescue helped the man, other officers made contact with Michelle Reid who appeared to be hiding between parked cars in the same parking garage. The woman, who was armed with a handgun, shot herself. She later died from her injuries.
Police believe that the man and woman were married but may have been separated.
