You seem them wearing badges and belts as they make sure your kids get to school safely. 12 students in our area were recognized as outstanding school safety patrollers.

These fifth graders not only walk kids from the bus and the car to school, they also make sure special needs students are taken care of. If they feel like there are some safety issues, they make sure to correct them.

AAA Mid-Atlantic's Myra Wieman says the kids deserved a special reward for all of their hard work.

"These kids have gone above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis," Wieman said. "So we're also going to give them $100 for a Visa gift card that they don't know about. And, special this year, $25 Wegmans Family Foundation gift cards."

AAA's safety patrol program has been around for 96 years. This is the 17th year AAA has given awards to safety patrollers in Anne Arundel, Howard, Harford, The City, Baltimore and Carroll counties.
