LANDOVER, Md. - A gun buyback event in Prince George's County Saturday morning had cars lined up, ready to trade in weapons for gift cards. The buyback was organized by the Prince George's County State's Attorneys Office, the Prince George's County Police Department and First Baptist Church of Glenarden.
The event offered people the chance to trade in guns for gift cards valued at up to $150. In just one hour of collection, the church says it's $10,000 supply of cards was depleted. It appeared at least three dozen firearms were surrendered although Prince George's County police couldn't confirm a final total as of Saturday afternoon.
Participants at the buyback rolled up to the church and had their guns removed from their cars by officers. Once they were unloaded, the weapons were taken inside and exchanged for gift cards. Those turning in guns did so anonymously. The weapons did not have to be functional to be turned in.
