CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Authorities in Cumberland say a 16-year-old boy is recovering after falling 40 feet down a cliff.

City police said in a statement the teen lost his balance while reaching for a tree branch Tuesday evening at the precipice near the Bishop Walsh School.

Maryland State Police Sgt. Donald Lehman says a helicopter crew worked with first responders to hoist the teen off the mountain.

City police say the teen was conscious when rescuers arrived. They say he was taken to the local Western Maryland Medical Center with injuries that are not life-threatening.
