A watermain break caused a sinkhole on Main Street in Ellicott City Wednesday morning.

The break has closed Main Street between Rogers Avenue and Klein Avenue.

Police were called at 3:21 a.m. to the 8600 block of Main Street for a reported water main break. The flowing water created a sinkhole underneath an unoccupied parked car.

No one was injured. Police have asked residents to move their vehicles from near the affected area.

The Howard County Bureau of Utilities is working to shut off the water main. The road has structural damage and will be shut down indefinitely, according to Steve Gerwin of Howard County Public Works.

Two area homes suffered flood damage. DPW is hoping to have service restores by Tuesday evening.

Gerwin said they hope to have the road reopened by Thursday morning rush hour. Water isn’t flooding the lower area of Main Street.
