Howard County Police: Man shot in standoff had pellet gun

A man armed with a pellet gun was shot in a standoff with police after he threatened to kill his family and himself, Howard County Police said.

Police said James Andrew Schueler, 42, of Columbia is in serious condition. Police shot him after he waved a weapon, which was revealed to be a replica pellet gun, at him. 

Police said the gun was nearly identical to a semi-automatic pistol. 

Around 7:05 a.m. Monday, a 911 caller said a man with a gun was on his way to an address in Columbia.

 
According to the caller, the man had threatened to kill family members and himself and had referenced committing suicide by cop, police said.
 
Once police arrived to the area of Hayshed Lane and Tamar Drive in Columbia just before 7:30 a.m., they spotted a green Jeep Cherokee that matched the description given by the caller.
 
The driver, a white man later identified as Schueler, refused to get out of the Jeep. The man told police that he had a gun and intended to hurt himself. He then held the gun to his head.
 
Officers began setting up a perimeter and called for negotiators.
 
At 8:16 a.m., Schueler got out of the car and pointed the gun at two groups of officers nearby, police said. An officer fired one shot, hitting him in the torso.
 
Police tactical medics were already on scene and provided medical aid.

Tamar Drive was closed between Phelps Luck Drive and Route 175 in Columbia for the investigation. People were asked to avoid the area.
