Man guilty in shooting of Howard County police officer

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - The man accused of shooting a Howard County police officer last fall was found guilty of most charges on Monday.

According to the Howard County State’s Attorney Office, Stephon Prather, 30, was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, using a handgun in the commission of a felony and using a firearm with a felony conviction. He was found not guilty of attempted first-degree murder.

Prather was jailed following shootout with three police officers near the 9500 block of Washington Blvd. in Laurel on Oct. 23, 2013. Officer Steven Houk, a two-year veteran of the department, was struck in the abdomen and taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. 

Prather was arrested the following morning , walking along Washington Blvd. having been wounded during the shootout.
