Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman announced $3.8 million will be dedicated to flood mitigation projects in Ellicott City.
“I made a commitment when I took office to address these flooding issues in Ellicott City,” said Kittleman in a press release. “It’s a quality of life issue for those who live here and I am committed to making sure we move forward with these critical projects to strengthen our infrastructure for future storm events.”
The county will undertake six projects ranging from retaining wall reconstruction and stream bank stabilization to watershed studies.
The flood mitigation funds include $1.7 million from a Natural Resources Conservation Services grant to repair walls damaged by the deadly July 30 flooding.
Several of the projects could begin by the end of the 2016 calendar year and, weather permitting, be completed by late spring or early summer of 2017.
Other projects include clearing debris from the Hudson Stream channel and stabilizing a stream bank along Longview Drive in Valley Mede. The latter is expected to be complete in late 2017 or early 2018.
