Howard County reviewing safety at schools

In the wake of the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, Howard County officials felt like it was time they re-evaluated their security.
They began with two community meetings led by a task force that's now come up with a list of recommendations to improve school safety in the county.

They want to see the physical security of schools improve, but they also want to see security practices more consistent across the school system.
Better communication between schools and parents and efforts to make staff more aware of available mental health resources for students are among items on the list of recommendations.

The task force says each school will be responsible for training employees on emergency response plans at least once a year.
