Gas main leak causes school evacuations in Elkridge

ELKRIDGE, Md. - An excavator struck a gas main causing three schools to be evacuated by fire officials early Friday afternoon.

According to Baltimore Gas and Electric, an excavator doing work at Ilchester Road and Landing Road in Elkridge struck a 4-inch gas main line.

The Howard County Fire Department evacuated everyone that was in Our Lady of Perpetual Help School as well as nearby homes as a safety precaution.

According to Howard County Public Schools, students at Ilchester Elementary and Bonnie Branch Middle Schools have been evacuated from the buildings as a precautionary measure.

Ilchester and Landing Roads remain closed while BGE maintenance crews were on the gas line.

BGE was unsure how long the homes and school would have to remain evacuated.
