Child, 1, hurt in school bus accident

COLUMBIA, Md. (WMAR) -

A 1-year-old child is recovering after the car she was riding in struck a school bus this morning.

Police responded to the intersection of Little Patuxent Parkway and Hickory Ridge Road in Columbia just before 8:00 a.m. for reports of the crash.

The investigation has determined that a Howard County Public School System bus headed to the Forbush School in Hunt Valley was going eastbound on Little Patuxent Parkway when an Acura was traveling westbound.

The Acura, driven by Ashley Nicole Smith, 23, made a left turn in front of the bus, and the bus collided with the rear passenger side door.

The 1-year-old was in the back seat in a child safety seat at the time of the crash. She was seriously injured and taken to Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the bus, the two bus aides, and two students age 10 and 6 were not injured in the crash.

At this time, no charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
