Officials say 18 emaciated horses were found on a farm in Howard County.

The horses were found in serious condition and rescued by the Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR).

The DEFHR is already caring for 80 horse needing shelter. Counting the 18 horses rescued Thursday, the rescue now cares for 39 neglected horses in total. Last year they had a record of 65 horses for the year.

"We are tracking to breaking last year's record intake and as a privately funded organization, we cannot stress enough the important of donations," said Executive Director Erin Clemm Ochoa. "Any and all support is greatly appreciated and most welcome."

The horses fared well overnight and are receiving veterinarian attention.

The organization say charges are pending.
