Man suspended from rope at Atkisson Dam rescued

UPDATE: (8:35 a.m.) -- Emergency crews in Harford County launched an extensive rescue effort Wednesday morning after a man became stuck in rope suspended from the Atkisson Dam near Abingdon.

Firefighters and technical rescue crews were called to the dam around 6:56 a.m., according to a release from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.

When they arrived, emergency personnel found a conscious, alert man suspended from the dam by rope, according to fire officials.

Crews were able to rescue the trapped man who was not injured, only suffering from exposure to the cold, according to a post from the Joppa-Magnolia public information Facebook page.

Staff from Joppa-Magnolia, Abingdon, Darlington, Kingsville and the Susquehanna Hose volunteer fire companies along with responders from the Baltimore County Fire Department and Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department worked together in the rescue effort.

Crews cleared the scene by 8:10 a.m.

Singer Road was blocked between Montrose Way and Clayton Road at of 7:30 a.m. as crews continued their rescue efforts, but the roads were reopened to traffic shortly after 8 a.m.

The Atkisson Dam area is property of the federal government.
