Rabies vaccination clinics now open

HARFORD COUNTY, Md. - The Harford County Health Department is sponsoring its annual rabies vaccination clinics.

The vaccination clinics is fore dogs, cats and ferrets that are 3-months-old and over and are held today from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again on May 1 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The fee for the vaccination is $5.00

Last year the department vaccinated a total of 2,458 dogs, cats and ferrets at its clinics.

Harford County Health Officer Susan Kelly states, "As the economy continues to struggle, we believe that concerned pet owners continue to look for value and find it with the Health Department's $5.00 shot that protects their pets against this deadly disease."

Only 11 rabies-positive animals were identified in 2010, compared to 16 in 2009 and 23 in 2008.

About 75% of the positive animals were raccoons, which are typically at a higher risk and are the most common exposure to domesticated animals.

Three rabies positive raccoons have already been documented in the first 2 months of this year.

The observance of the 2011 Easter holiday has presented the Health Department with some unique scheduling challenges for the rabies clinics. This year, the four clinics that are normally held on the last Sunday of the month will be held a week earlier.
