A man, his mobile scooter, his dog, Gracie, and a mission.

Doug Craig is making a 12-day, 300 mile journey from New York City to Washington, D.C on his battery-powered mobile scooter.

Craig is hoping to raise awareness and research funds for the debilitating disease that left him not able to walk, Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, or FSHD.

FSHD is a form of muscular dystrophy that doesn't get a lot of attention in the medical field because it progresses slower than other forms of muscular dystrophy.

"Many of the people adapt an 'I can handle it attitude,'" Craig says. "That's what I sort of did, and with that attitude I wasn't motivated to really be an activist for research.  Now that I've met more people with the disease, I've recognized the need for those of us with FSHD to act."

Craig says he hopes the funds raised now will help the next generation with FSHD better cope with their disease in the future.

He made his way through Harford County on Tuesday.
