Havre de Grace Elementary School teacher Thomas Dennison was awarded with the Milken Educator award.

Dennison is unconventional in his teaching style and techniques.

“I think Mr. Dennison is very unconventional. He really looks at the heart of his students and understands where they’re coming from," principal Ronald Wooden said.

He said he's a proponent of reaching each and every one of his students. He stresses individuality and that's what drives him.

“I think that's more of what our world needs, is individuality” he said. “To be honest, I got this so I can spread some of what God has put in my heart and the way we can teach kids and love kids and take care of kids.”

Dennison also said he doesn’t mind how they learn, as long as they’re retaining the information and doing well.

“I don’t care where you work, I don’t care who you work with, I care about the quality of the work you’re doing,” Dennison said.

Dennison is one of only 35 teachers nationwide to receive the Milken Educator Award and the $25,000 prize.

The award is given to mid-career teachers for what they’ve achieved and for the promise of what they’ll accomplish for the future students.
