Aldi’s third Harford County location will open in Bel Air by the end of the year, according to one of the company’s vice presidents.

Jeff Baehr, vice president of Aldi's Frederick division, said the location in the Bel Air Plaza was chosen for several reasons, including population density and traffic patterns in the area.

“We want to be conveniently located for our shoppers,” Baehr said in an email.

A Mars grocery store was previously in that location, but it closed in early 2015, according to media reports at the time. All Mars stores went out of business at the end of July.

Plans call for the store to have about 12,000 square feet of selling space, with five aisles, typical for Aldi stores, Baehr said.

“Aldi offers shoppers a modern and convenient shopping environment with inviting colors, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials such as energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting,” he said. “The store will also be simple to navigate with easy-to-spot product signage and prominent product prices.”

Germany-based Aldi is known for selling everyday grocery items at a discount of up to 50 percent, including meat, bread, dairy and produce.

Baehr said Aldi announced an accelerated growth plan in December 2013, with plans to open 650 new stores by the end of 2018.

He said each Aldi store employs 12 to 20 workers.

Aldi has two other locations in Harford County, one in Aberdeen and one in Edgewood.
