Fireworks shooter sustains hand injury during Darlington fireworks display

A professional fireworks shooter was injured Saturday night while igniting fireworks during Darlington's 33rd Annual Independence Day event, according to the Deputy State Fire Marshals.

At approximately 9:36 p.m., at Francis Silver Park, employees with Fireworks Extravaganza notified the Deputy State Fire Marshal at the event that the fireworks shooter sustained a severe hand injury.

Darlington Volunteer Fire Company EMS personnel were requested. Fire crews determined Larry Mays, 44, suffered partial amputation of his left ring finger.

Mays was transported to MedStar Union Memorial Hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition.  

The investigation continues into the exact cause of the explosion.
